How Communion with God Will Change Your Life

Communion with God is so important for our lives. It is true that the love of God is beyond comprehension and very much intoxicating. Just tasting of the depths of His love through our devotion to Him is totally transforming.

As we continue to spend time with Him we are sowing into a life that has the deepest and richest eternal reward – even in this present life. As we taste of His goodness we keep coming back for more!

What we reap back is a life filled with the reality of His love, saturated with His Presence along with blessings that cannot be numbered –  because we are placing the highest value on spending time with Him.

Above all things the Lord desires intimacy and communion with us. In the garden that intimacy was lost, but in Christ it has been restored. Now we have full access to experience God at any time. There is nothing more satisfying than His love and glory in our lives.

It is God’s Pleasure to Be with You

And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.

Luke 10:41-42

The Lord was so pleased with Mary because she had found the value of sitting before His feet – hearing His words. Martha was busy with much serving. It is always easier for people to be busy doing things rather than just spending time with God.

Spending time with God, to the natural mind, seems like a waste of time because it involves us being motionless, quieting our soul and allowing God to speak to us. Mary had discovered the value of communion with God.

But when we find that place with the Lord we realize just how many things we have been doing in our own flesh –  rather than doing things from a place of just hearing what He wants us to do.

What we do should be completely connected with what He has shown us to do. Otherwise we are just shooting randomly hoping we will somehow hit the target. The problem is that we can be aiming completely the opposite direction.

Being Yielded in Your Communion with God

Our position before the Lord means much. Mary wanted to make sure she heard the voice of Jesus so she got as close as she could to make sure she could hear clearly. The Lord is not interested in our what we can do for Him. He wants to show us what to do rather than us stepping out independent of Him.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Romans 12:1

Things work much better that way. He will be pleased as we are bearing good fruit in Him.  In the place of surrender we are living sacrifices to God.

Learning to Quiet Thoughts

Sometimes it can be a fight when it comes to quieting things down – even not doing what everyone else says is the “thing to do” and putting God first.

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Galatians 5:16-17

God has given us a new heart, but the “flesh”, the natural mind and sinful nature fights against it. The natural mind creates all kinds of concerns, lists and opportunities for us to miss the “one thing” that matters the most. This busyness and distraction robs us of the life Jesus died for us to have – even the reality of His Presence in our lives.

Recognize your thoughts. God is serious about having rule over our thinking.  All doubt, unbelief, worry, accusation, complaint and every other unclean thing that is inspired by hell needs to be removed from our thinking. God desires our thinking to be permeated with His truth and peace. As we learn to control our thought life we walk in greater measures of His peace – even receiving the love of God poured into our hearts by His Spirit.

The Benefits of Communion with God

The benefits we receive through our communion with God are immeasurable. As we grow in devotion to Him all the things that we thought were so important are not as significant as we first thought.

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints…

Ephesians 1:17-18

God sent His Son Jesus to restore intimate fellowship. Everything else that we strive to do is in vain without this most vital aspect of our spiritual lives. All of our efforts without true intimacy with God would be like trying to pour water out of a dry bucket.

Without abiding in Him we have nothing to give. Jesus said He could do nothing apart from the Father. In the same way none of the striving of our flesh can produce the life of God. But as we are filled with His Spirit – love, grace and peace will be the result. His love is intoxicating and will only grow in us as we stay in union and communion with Him.

Find music to help you in your communion with God. Experience God in powerful ways through soaking in His Presence. Soaking prayer will awaken your spirit to receive more from God.

  1. This has been so enlightening. God is teaching me what intimacy with Him is and He has used this to open the eyes of my heart even more to seeing what He is doing as our relationship is going deeper. Thank you
